CCA June News

June 5, 2013

Dear Friends

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the CCA’s recent sell-out event: the May 31 lunch address by His Excellency Sebastian Pinera, President of the Republic of Chile. The event, at Toronto’s Shangri-La Hotel, drew more than 260 guests, including CEOs and other leaders from the energy and banking sectors, as well as Natural Resources Minister and federal MP Joe Oliver and Chile’s Foreign Minister.

In his address, Pres. Pinera talked about the advances Chile has made during his term as President, and his goal to eliminate extreme poverty in his country by the end of the decade. He highlighted the deep trade and political ties between Canada and Chile. Trade has quadrupled since a free-trade agreement was signed in1997 and Canada is the third largest investor in Chile. During his visit, the Chilean President signed agreements in Ottawa to expand and encourage professional and educational exchanges between the two countries.

Take a look at our photo gallery from the event.

And watch videos of the event, including an introduction by Ken Frankel, CCA Chair.

The CCA also helped to set up an editorial board with the Globe and Mail for Pres. Pinera, a meeting which generated two news articles, an editorial and a video. As the editorial board noted: “Chile and Canada have much in common, with economies to a great extent based on commodities. Their relationship is likely to be increasingly one of equality, rather than largely one-way investment.”

Looking ahead, we have the honour of hosting, with the Peruvian-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Julio Velarde, President of Peru’s Central Bank, at Heenan Blaikie in Toronto. He will speak at a luncheon on July 15, moderated by Jonathan Hausman, CCA Vice Chair. Mr. Velarde will also speak the following day in Vancouver. The esteemed economist will share the story behind Peru’s extraordinary and sustained growth, as well as outline challenges and opportunities ahead for this South American country of 30 million. Tickets are $70 for members and $35 for non-members. Please visit the website www.ccacanada.com to register. For sponsorship opportunities, please mail president@ccacanada.com.

Marina contributed to the Inter-American Dialogue’s Latin America Advisor on the Pacific Alliance, and this month will travel to the Conference de Montreal.
