Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Honoured at CCA Dinner

The Canadian Council for the Americas (CCA) honoured Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso at a dinner at the Ritz-Carlton on April 10 in Toronto. Some 250 guests and sponsors attended, including the president’s wife, First Lady Nadine Heredia, and several top ministers. Included in President Humala’s delegation were: the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eda Rivas Franchini; the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Magaly Silva; the Minister of Defence Pedro Cateriano; and Vice Ministers Guillermo Shinno and Martin Vegas (Mines and Energy, and Education).

Lynne Yelich, Canada’s Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) helped open the evening with welcoming remarks. Several ambassadors were also in attendance including Jose Antonio Bellina, Peru’s amassador to Canada; Patricia Fortier, Canada’s ambassador to Peru; and Ambassador Carlos Gómez-Múgica (Spain) and Luis Carlos Delgado (Costa Rica). Beatriz Merino, a former Peruvian prime minister, also attended the dinner.

President Ollanta Humala Tasso is a recipient of the CCA’s prestigious Statesman of the Year Award for 2013. He who was originally scheduled to visit Toronto in November of 2013 but political developments kept him at home. His April 2014 visit to Toronto came at the end of a three-day long trip to Canada, where he was first received in Ottawa by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
